What is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder marked by a pattern of unwanted, repetitive, anxious thoughts (obsessions) followed by actions completed for the purpose of reducing or neutralizing those anxious thoughts (compulsions). Compulsions are an understandable response to intense anxiety, but it seems that the more time people spend warding off anxiety with compulsions, the more anxious they become.

There are an unlimited number of possible obsessions, although some common types of obsessions and compulsions include:

Most people experience some degree of anxiety related to the fears listed above. However, individuals with OCD often experience intense anxiety related to these fears and spend significant portions of their day engaged in compulsive behavior. The intensity of the anxiety, or the frequency of the compulsions, typically interferes with individuals' ability to work, socialize, or enjoy their lives.

For further information about ERP,  please read the International OCD Foundation's  (IOCDF) description of ERP. Jonah Lakin, Psy.D. is a proud member of the IOCDF and provides ERP at the OCD & Anxiety Center of Cleveland.
